1905 - 1997

Natlaya Gippius, critically-acclaimed painter and restorer was born in 1905 in the city of Samara, Russia.  From 1924-1928, she studied at the Perm Institute under noted art professors I. Vradchenko, A. Shestakov and V. Hazanov.  She was selected as a top student and sent to Leningrad (St. Petersburg) to study at the prestigious Russian Academy of Fine Arts.  There she created many landscapes and nature-related paintings that became immensely popular in both local and national exhibitions.  The Russian countryside, villages and winter scenes became the principal themes for paintings by the young Natalya.  Gippius attended the Repin Institute of Art in Leningrad 1928-1930.  During that time, she studied under professors P. Osmerkin, N. Udalcov, K. Istomin and N. Favorski.

From 1930 to 1932 she studied at the Monumental Art Institute of the Art Academy under Petrov-Vodkin. In 1934 she took a trip to the Central Asian Region of the Soviet Union where she painted many landscapes in Turkmenistan. She used bright colors and wide brushstrokes to show the land’s great expanses. That is how the series of work dedicated to the "Russian South" was born. These landscapes were praised by local art critics and many works became part of the permanent collection of the State Art Museum of Turkmenistan. 

As her art career progressed, Gippius began to insert figures into her landscapes and focused on the relationship between people and nature. She would do multiple sketches in search of the right composition—the one that would express her emotional reaction to a scene. 

In 1935 she started to participate in various Union of Artists exhibitions in Russia and had her first solo show. She received critical praise for her series of plein air landscapes called "Four Seasons of the Russian Village" (painted from 1934 to 1937.) 

During World War II Gippius was evacuated to Southern Russia during which time her art was often published in various magazines and newspapers, often seen by soldiers at the front. At the end of World War II, Gippius returned to Leningrad to find her beloved city in ruin. She soon became the Lead Artist at the restoration projects on the St. Isaac Cathedral and Kazan Cathedral. She stayed involved with various restoration projects through the 1950’s. She continued working as an art advisor to the City of St. Petersburg until her death in 1997.

  • "Old Russian Architectural Monuments in the Work of Russian Artists", Mosow, 1966;
  • "Landmarks of the Motherland" Exhibition, Moscow, 1967;
  • "All Russian Anniversary" Exhibition, St. Petersburg, 1969.


Today, works of Gippius are in the permanent collections of The Russian State Museum (St. Petersburg), the Museum of Ethnography (St. Petersburg), the State Art Museum of Turkmenistan and several smaller regional museums.  

Gippius is listed in Matthew Bown’s, A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters.
