Popov is a well-known painter amongst fans of Soviet/Russian painting in the West. He was a graduate of the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow in 1951 and became a member of the Union of Artists of Russia three years later. He became an Honored Artist of Russia in 1970 and a People’s Artist of Russia in 1980. His works hang in the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow.

This painting shows dusk in the historic village of Bolshoi Pyssa on the left bank of the Mezen River in Russia.

He is listed on page 248 of Matthew Bown’s, A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters.
